At Pathways, we understand that navigating the mental health needs of children and teens can be challenging for parents. To provide clarity, we sat down with Cindy Hendricks, the mental health supervisor at our Canton office, to discuss some frequently asked questions about our counseling services.

How Can Parents Know If Their Child Might Benefit from Counseling?

Cindy explains that children might benefit from counseling if they often seem unhappy, are difficult to manage, or display big feelings and upsetting thoughts or behaviors. These signs can indicate underlying issues that need attention, especially if the child has experienced significant changes in their life that are hard to adjust to.

Finding the Right Therapist for Your Child

At Pathways, we match children with therapists through an intake assessment. This assessment involves discussing the child’s problems, health history, family dynamics, and how the child functions in various settings like school and community activities. This comprehensive evaluation helps us identify the child’s needs and match them with a therapist who has the relevant expertise.

Parental Involvement in Counseling Sessions

Parents often wonder if they can be involved in their child’s counseling sessions. Cindy assures that parents play a crucial role, especially during the initial assessment and treatment planning stages. Depending on the child’s needs, parents may participate in individual sessions with their child or family support sessions recommended by the counselor.

Qualifications of Pathway Therapists

All our counselors and therapists hold degrees in counseling, social work, or marriage and family therapy. While some have bachelor’s degrees, most possess master’s degrees, ensuring they are well-equipped to help children develop coping skills and navigate their challenges.

Home Visits and Telehealth Services

While our therapists currently do not offer home visits, we provide telehealth services, allowing families to receive support through virtual meetings. Additionally, we have case management services that can visit homes depending on the child’s needs.

Pathway School-Based Counseling

Pathways also offers school-based counseling, where our providers work directly within schools. This service allows children to receive support in a familiar environment, facilitating easier access to counseling services.

Pathway Trauma-Informed Counseling

Our therapists are trained in trauma-informed care, understanding the impact of trauma on children, families, and communities. They use specialized interventions and, in some cases, hold certifications in trauma-focused approaches, ensuring they provide the best care possible.

Therapist Availability and Scheduling Appointments

Our Canton office operates Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and on Friday mornings. We aim to schedule appointments within two to three weeks, depending on community needs.

If you think your child could benefit from counseling, please reach out to us via our website or contact our enrollment staff. We’re here to help your child navigate their challenges and support their mental well-being. Thank you, Cindy, for providing this valuable information.
