For over three decades, Kirsten Wilson, LSW, has been an integral part of Pathway Caring for Children’s mission to help children and families realize the possibilities of their lives. As we celebrate Social Work Month, it’s fitting to highlight the remarkable career of this dedicated professional who embodies the heart and soul of social work.

Kirsten’s journey with Pathway began 31 years ago when she joined the organization as a foster care case manager. Over the years, her role has evolved, but her commitment to the mission has remained unwavering. Currently serving as a Licensing Assessor, Kirsten plays a crucial role in ensuring that Pathway’s foster families maintain their certifications and licenses.

Kirsten’s work as a Licensing Assessor is vital to the foster care system. Her responsibilities include:

  • Meeting with foster families to update their licenses
  • Carefully reviewing and processing necessary paperwork
  • Assessing the suitability of foster homes
  • Ensuring compliance with state regulations

Her attention to detail and patient approach are essential qualities that make her excel in this position.

When asked about her long-standing commitment to Pathway, Kirsten shared, “I’ve stayed at Pathway this long because I truly believe in its mission and enjoy helping children and families in need.” This sentiment reflects the core values of social work and demonstrates why Kirsten has been such a valuable asset to the organization for over three decades.

One of the aspects Kirsten appreciates about her role at Pathway is the flexibility it has offered her throughout her career. She noted, “I was given the opportunity to work part-time for 22 years while raising my four children.” This balance between professional dedication and personal life is a testament to Pathway’s supportive work environment and understanding of their employees’ needs.

For Kirsten, the most rewarding part of her job is the opportunity to connect with families on a personal level. She explains, “My favorite thing about my job is getting to hear families’ life stories, especially the changes that occur with being a foster or adoptive family.” These interactions provide insight into the transformative power of foster care and adoption, reinforcing the importance of the work done at Pathway.

Throughout her career, Kirsten has collected numerous memorable experiences. One that stands out is a conference she attended in St. Louis with colleagues Tracy Roberts and Anne DeGraffinreed, along with Pathway’s founders, Jim and Velma Bridges. This trip not only provided professional development opportunities but also created lasting bonds and humorous anecdotes that Kirsten cherishes to this day.

Kirsten’s story is just one example of the dedicated professionals who make up the Pathway team. Social workers at Pathway face daily challenges with:

  • Flexibility
  • Tenacity
  • Creativity

These qualities enable them to provide the best possible care for children and families in need. The tireless dedication of social workers like Kirsten is truly the heart of Pathway’s mission.

While Kirsten’s professional life is focused on helping others, she also maintains a rich personal life with interesting hobbies and preferences:

  • A love for winter weather
  • Enthusiasm for skiing with her family
  • A wish for more snow each year

These personal details offer a glimpse into the well-rounded life of a social worker who finds joy both in her work and personal pursuits.
